Weed Is Legal. Now Stop Celebrating and Learn Some Stuff.

While the newfound legality of cannabis for recreational use is cause for celebration, (weed is legal, yay), the end of our generation’s version of prohibition has also left a wake of confusion when it comes to navigating the surrounding culture. A centennial-long threat of incarceration has shrouded the process of utilizing the cannabis plant. Now that the proverbial smoke has lifted, there seems to be an overwhelming feeling shared by new consumers: weed is legal, now what?

Truth is, the world of weed is nuanced with cultural dos and don’ts, as well as an onslaught of scientific information that can either deem the process of getting high positive or overwhelming. Now that cannabis is legal, where can I legally consume it? What’s the difference between CBD (Cannabidiol) and THC (Delta 9 Tetrahydrocannabinol)? What’s the suggested amount of THC for a first time consumer?

Never fear - we are here to provide information and guidance which has been amassed over time.

One fear shared among many novice consumers seems to be the fear of getting too stoned. THC is one of more than 100 cannabinoids (chemical compounds) found in the cannabis plant, and is the main psychoactive cannabinoid that gets you high. If you’re a novice consumer, try to keep the THC content as low as possible and choose a product that also contains CBD. If you are choosing a cannabis product that you will ingest, start with no more than 2.5 mg of THC and wait until the next day to take more.

CBD, a cannabinoid that does not produce the psychoactive effect of THC, is also a great way to test the waters of cannabis. The product label will also have CBD content listed. If you’re just starting out, try looking for products with a greater amount of CBD than THC content, and if you’re really nervous, cut the THC altogether and just try out CBD.

Always decline weed if you don’t want to smoke. However you’re feeling is what you should be doing. If anyone tries to encourage you to consume more than you are comfortable with, they are not your friend.

Overall, the real key to cannabis consumption is taking a measured approach instead of trying to go as far as you can. Be confident in yourself and your decisions. Everyone is different, and only you know what’s right for you.
