No one wants to throw more waste into landfills.

So let's not.

In October 2018, Tweed partnered with TerraCycle to develop the first national recycling program for packaging in the Canadian cannabis industry. Now, this same partnership is opening up to include cannabis vapes. Exciting times, right?

“But who is this TerraCycle?” we hear you ask. TerraCycle is a global leader in providing waste collection programs for hard-to-recycle materials. They’re good people.

Before we jump in, let us just say that there are some pretty good reasons to get involved, not least of which being that your heart is bound to swell with the knowledge that you’re part of the solution:

  • You’ll be reducing waste – let us just say, “Yay.”

  • It’s free. (Not a typo.)

  • You can feel good about helping the planet. We know we alluded to this already, but lists look better when they’re longer.

Now, as promised, here’s how it all works.

What is this partnership? Lay it out for me.

Let’s start with the Tweed | TerraCycle Cannabis Packaging Program. It was designed to keep cannabis packaging out of landfills. outer packaging, inner packaging, tins, joint tubes, plastic bottles, plastic caps, and flexible plastic bags—if it came from a licensed producer (and it has the red THC logo to prove it), then you can recycle through this program. TerraCycle takes it, cleans it, and melts it down into plastic pellets that can be transformed into new products...which can be recycled again and turned into newer products. It’s a truly wonderful cycle.

Next up is the Tweed | TerraCycle Cannabis Vape Recycling Program. With cannabis vapes hitting the market, it’s important we do what we can to keep those out of landfills, too. Any cannabis cartridges and batteries collected will be manually disassembled and sorted by components. The plastic will be pelletized and used to make new products (just like the packaging), and anything electronic will be shredded and sorted into precious metals. These metals then get melted and used for new products that are made of...well, metal.

We’ve worked hand-in-hand with TerraCycle to make sure our vapes can be processed and given a second life—so only cannabis vape batteries and cartridges from Canopy Growth brands will be accepted. If you’re wondering what counts as a Canopy Growth brand, here’s a handy list:

2. Set Up

Once registered and approved, you’ll receive two collection boxes to set up in your store. One is for packaging, one is for vapes, and both are super easy to set up. Place the plastic liner inside the collection boxes (we suggest stapling the bag right to them), and find a high-traffic area in your store where your customers can find them. Like we said: easy.

NOTE: Due to the potential for confusion, we need to make sure that the boxes appear in your store exactly as they’re intended to. In the interest of making sure no recycling goes to waste, please do not modify the boxes or replace them with ones of your own.

3. Collect

Encourage your customers to use both Tweed | TerraCycle programs, and ensure they are using the correct box to dispose of their cannabis packaging or used Canopy Growth vapes.

Inform your customers that vapes should only be recycled once the product is used up, and to make sure that all packaging is empty of any residual product. UPS won’t accept wet packages (can’t really blame them), so definitely make sure you double check.

4. Ship

Once a collection box is full, remove the inner plastic liner and place it into any cardboard box. Download a free shipping label from your TerraCycle account—make sure it’s for the correct waste stream, either packaging or vapes—and affix it to the box. You can call UPS at 1-800-742-5877 to arrange next-day pickup or just use your next scheduled UPS pickup.

It’s important that you don’t empty the collection box until it’s full. By sending in larger shipments, you ship less frequently and decrease the environmental impact of transportation from this program.

NOTE: Please DO NOT ship using your custom collection boxes. You’re going to need those.

5. Restock

Restock the custom collection box with a new plastic liner and continue collecting cannabis packaging and vapes to recycle. Continue that cycle of recycling.
